Study Approach
Gathered bicycle, pedestrian, and motor-vehicle crash data for the five-year period of 01/01/2016 - 12/31/2021 in order to:
- Conduct an analysis of crash attributes for all crash types including focus on ones involving bicycles/pedestrians known as Vulnerable Road Users (VRU)
- Identify key crash trends
- Map crashes based on severity
- Analyze contextual factors (risk factor analysis)
Overall Summary
- During the study time period there were a total of 52 crashes that involved a death or serious injury, with the vast majority (81%) involving a single vehicle.
- Of these single vehicle crashes the predominant factor involved a lane or roadway departure, i.e. where a vehicle has left the road.
Crash Cluster Analysis Map
An aggregate clustering analysis of the most severe crashes, also known as "Killed or Seriously Injured" (KSI), was performed based solely on proximity, which provides some preliminary guidance on where the focus of the study should be following the network and risk factor analyses. These clusters are symbolized as separate color groupings where at least 4 KSI crashes occurred within a 1-mile area. The map also shows which of these crashes resulted in a fatality with a red circle. A general overview of each Cluster locations is as follows:
- Cluster 1 - This crash cluster is just outside the city limits of Clinton on and near Laurel Road and Sulphur Springs Road
- Cluster 2 - These crashes are mostly on Hillvale Road on both sides of I-75
- Cluster 3 - These crashes are in or near the City of Rocky Top
- Cluster 4 - This cluster of crashes is located in the area of Anderson County generally between Clinton and Rocky Top and west of Clinton Highway
- Cluster 5 - These crashes are located in the Dutch Valley part of the county and are clustered along Dutch Valley Road and Marlow Road
